Dedicated to Football

Managers are usually seen as the ones who “arrow” people to do things. The lower-level people will normally think that their job is so relaxed and easy. However, is it really the case? In this journal, I would like to talk about football managers since I am so obsessed with football. I want to discuss about what makes a successful football manager at the highest level.

Firstly, there must be a passion for football. There has to be an insatiable drive to succeed, a competitive edge to win games and ultimately trophies. You have to understand the basics of football before you can manage a team. Many successful managers were once football players themselves, all for the love of the game. Working at different levels of football industry is a major asset. Take Chelsea Football Club manager, Jose Mourinho, for example. He was once a player, translator for the manager, talents scout, assistant coach, before becoming one of the highest paid football managers in the world now.

A lot of preparation is involved before every match. Training programs, diet and even minute details of their lifestyle is closely managed by the football manager. Choosing the right players and cautious substitution is also a vital part of the game strategy. It is important for the manager to be able to fire his team up if they did not perform well in the first-half. . Sir Alex Ferguson of Manchester United Football Club was quoted during his half-time talk in the European Cup Finals 1999 (his team was down 1-0), “At the end of this game, the European Cup will be only six feet away from you and you'll not even able to touch it if we lose. And for many of you that will be the closest you will ever get. Don't you dare come back inhere without giving your all” His team went on to win the match 2-1.

Every successful manager is able to manage their players well in terms of their mental and physical conditions. Holding meetings with players and the coaching staff regularly plays an important part in ensuring good relationships among one another. He is one who is able to access and bring out the best qualities of his players. Showing loyalty to players is also important. This is especially so when the player is down and out in life and needs some encouragement. The football manager has to be confident of himself to earn the respect of the men around him. All these help to gel the team together.

Winning is important to the managers, as well as it is to the players, as it represents the results of their hard work. Jose Mourinho once quoted, “I hate to speak about players individually. Players do not win trophies, squads win trophies. I cannot say I love this player, I love players who love to win. They not only win in 90 minutes, but every day, every training session, in every moment of their lives.”
